also ahead new developments on a rape case in ohio that's making national headlines. two teenage girls now arrested for threatening the young victim. coming up, why ohio's attorney general says this case should be a wake-up call for all parents. we have a moving video, a mother who was born deaf and is able to hear the voice of her son for the first time. i don't think there will be a dry eye. but we'll get started with the beginning of president obama's trip to the middle east. nbc's chief white house correspondent chuck todd is in jerusalem this morning. chuck, good morning to you. >> reporter: well, good morning, savannah. among the first things the president said as he got air force one "it's good to get away from congress." that's the tone he set. there is more serious business here. this trip will be heavier on symbolism, probably lighter on substance. the big small goal, if you will, of the president, is to improve his personal perception here in israel, and hope that improvement gives him greater

influence in the region. president obama arrived this morning in israel his first visit here as president. >> thank you so much, good to see you. >> it's wonderful to be here. >> how are you, my friend? good to see you. >> reporter: greeted with pomp and circumstance. topping the agenda with prime minister netanyahu the conflict in syria and iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons, but little progress is expected open the dormant israeli/palestinian peace plan. it's not how he thought things would be going in the region at this point. at the start of his presidency, he declared with great fanfare he would begin pushing for peace immediately unlike his predecessors. >> we're not going to wait until the end of my administration to deal with palestinian and israeli peace. we're going to start now. peace is hard work. >> reporter: his pressure led to a low point in the relationship. >> we believe the borders of israel and palestine should be based on the 1967 lines. >> it cannot go back to the 1967

lines, because these lines are in defensible. >> reporter: and those confrontations didn't make the president popular here. nearly 40% of israelis feel the president is hostile to israel according to a recent poll. the president hopes to improve his popularity with an address to young people. >> each side has symbols and extraordinary sensitivities and the problem is that each side's symbol is the other side's problem, so you have to find a way to connect with each side emotionally. >> reporter: for their part the israeli embassy released a humorous video claiming the obama/netanyahu relationship is better than many believe. ♪ thank you for being a friend traveled down the road and back again ♪ >> reporter: there's that symbolism i was telling you about, savannah. in more serious business today we expect syria to probably be the hot topic of the press conference between the prime prime minister, because israeli government officials say chemical weapons have been used

in that syrian conflict. u.s. officials have not said that. we'll be curious to hear what the president has to say about it. >> lots to watch in jerusalem this morning. chuck todd, thank you. and stay with nbc news, we'll have complete coverage of the president's trip to the middle east. and now here's hoda. we have new information on a chilling plot to attack students at the university of central florida. police believe they closed in on a suspect just before he was set to go on a shooting spree and this morning for the first time we are hearing the 911 call that helped stop it. nbc's mark potter is in miami with more. good morning, mark. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. police say they still cannot explain why the man had weapons and explosives in his college dorm room, a situation they were made aware of by a 911 call from his roommate. >> the fire alarm went off. i opened the door to see what was going on, and he's there with like some sort of like gun, like large assault gun. >> reporter: alerted by that 911 call, officers scrambled to the dorm, on a police videotape they

can be seen preparing to enter the room of the student they'd been told was carrying a gun. when the door was open the lead officer moved in and quickly found the student lying on the floor apparently shot to death and waved the other officers back. authorities would later determine that 32-year-old james oliver seevakumaran had taken his life. a disaster foiled by that 911 call by his roommate. >> i don't know if it is a real gun. i don't know what it is. i just saw it and i slammed my door shut and locked it. >> reporter: the roommate was later found safe. he spoke to a student reporter. >> my biggest concern was him shooting through the door, shooting through the walls because i don't know what type of weapon -- what caliber of gun he had. >> reporter: police say they still don't have a motive for why he had weapons, 1,000 rounds of ammunition and explosives in his room. on tuesday they found more items in packages he never picked up from the campus mail room including magazines for his

rifle and a training dvd. his family asked for privacy, and described him as a nonviolent loner. >> everything that we uncovered is that the deceased acted alone. we found no connection to any group or organization or anybody else. >> reporter: police found a list where the gunman had planned his day. the last two items read "pull alarm, good luck and give them hell" without explaining why or what he meant to do. police had been able to uncover anything from the gunman's past that would explain his actions on the day he died. hoda? >> interesting, thanks mark potter live. let's get to natalie morales here with the other top stories of the morning. >> hey, natalie. >> ladies day. good morning, everyone. we begin with several major south korean banks and broadcasters at a standstill after their commuter systems were paralyzed in what appears to be a cyber attack possibly from north korea. south korean authorities are

investigating the hack. a deadly training accident at a military depot that claimed the lives of at least seven marines is under investigation. miguel almaguer has the latest from where the investigation is taking place. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, this army depot is where special forces have trained for years. the military still doesn't know what went wrong here, leaving at least seven dead and another eight injured. >> the red of our country's flag was made redder by their heroism. >> reporter: an emotional tribute for the victims just beyond the gates of nevada's hawthorne army depot. 21-year-old david fenn's family identified the marine among those fatally wounded. late monday night the servicemembers were air lifted after a mortar explosion during a live fire training exercise. the marines say a 60 millimeter round suddenly exploded inside a mortar tube. >> every loss of life is heartbreaking whether that

occurs in afghanistan, hawthorne, nevada, camp lucerne, north carolina, or anywhere else. >> reporter: the troops members of the 2nd marine division in camp lejeune in north carolina, were taking part in mountain warfare training. here in nevada this military community considers them family. >> we're really hurting so bad because these people are so young, they're just now beginning to live. >> reporter: two and a half hours outside of reno the massive 230-square mile facility is used to store and dispose of ammunition. the desert terrain is ideal for training special forces. today the base remains operational as the military searches for answers. as the military investigation pushes on, we now know that 60 millimeter mortars have been suspended temporarily for use within the military. five service members do remain hospitalized. natalie? >> thank you, miguel almaguer.

democratic leaders are removing a provision calling for an assault weapons ban from the firearms legislation going before the senate next month. senate majority leader harry reid says the provision was dropped because he feared republican opposition would block passage of any bill at all. convicted teen killer t.j. lane will spend the rest of his life behind bars without parole. the 18-year-old was sentenced on tuesday to three life sentences for the shooting deaths of three students at an ohio school cafeteria. lane wore a t-shirt with the word "killer" written on it, cursed the courtroom and gestured obscenely. let's head to wall street, cnbc's jackie deangelis has the latest. good morning, jackie. >> good morning, natalie. investors closely watching the situation in cyprus after lawmakers there rejected a controversial bailout proposal that would have taxed regular savings accounts. the concern is that the debt crisis in the eurozone is back on the table and that could weigh on stocks. later today the nation's top

rainfall. we're mostly dry at this point. look what's headed toward the south bay. pretty significant batch on its way to santa cruz, san jose areas like campbell as we head the next 30, 40 minutes. about 58 minutes away from parkmoor. these showers will continue. residual shower tomorrow morning. lots of sunshine to follow friday through the weekend. forecast. >> dylan, thank you so much. there is new fallout tied to the rape convictions of two high school football players in ohio. two teenage girls are accused of posting online threats against the young victim. nbc's ron allen is in steubenville for us. ron, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. during the trial we learned that while the victim certainly has a lot of sympathy and support in this community, friends have turned against her, others have blamed her for bringing a lot of unwanted attention to this community, negative attention. now we know she's also faced a death threat.

two teenaged girls being escorted into court, their faces off camera because they're just 16 and 15. the two accused of sending threatening twitter messages to a rape victim whose case upended this small ohio community. >> the state's position is that they be remanded to the custody of the juvenile detention facility. >> reporter: audible sobs could be heard from the defendants when the judge agreed. investigators say just hours after a jury found two high school football players guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl following alcohol-fueled parties, the teens posted intimidating tweets. "you ripped my family apart. you made my cousin cry, so when i see you, expletive, it's again to be a homicide. i'll celebrate by beating the expletive out of the victim's name. this isn't the first time the victim has been threatened in social media. and the investigation is not over. next month a grand jury meets to

decide if other teens, parents and community leaders were involved in tampering with or covering up evidence. >> what's even more shocking and appalling is the crimes of sexual assault are occurring every friday night, every saturday night across this country. >> reporter: with these threatening tweets plus the text messages and pictures posted that documented the assault, experts say the case is a cautionary tale about teens and what they post on social media. >> it can be really innocuous stuff or this really serious stuff that we're seeing with the steubenville case. we aren't stopping to think if everybody sees this, what happens? >> reporter: prosecutors asked for the two teens to be held without bond to help protect the rape victim they allegedly threatened. the judge agreed. their lawyers have not entered a plea as of yet. if found guilty they could be held in juvenile detention until they're 21 years old. >> ron allen in steubenville, thank you. mike dewine is the attorney general of ohio. sir, good morning to you.

>> good morning. >> let's start with these new charges. are you trying to send a message? >> you know, the victim continues to be victimized. she has been victimized by the act itself. she's had to go through the court proceeding, but it's been horrible for her family to look at these things that have been posted, and so freedom of speech is fine, first amendment is wonderful, but these two individuals crossed the line. you cannot under ohio law threaten to kill someone. >> let me ask you this -- >> we're not going to tolerate it, and we're not going to put up with it. >> the defense attorney for one of these young women said in fact she does not know the victim and did not send the message to her and she says prosecutors have overcharged here because of the scrutiny. your response to that? >> my response is we're sick and tired of the victim being victimized. we have to protect the victim.

we're going to take whatever action it takes to protect this young lady. you know, imagine going through a rape and then having to see things on the internet that are totally obnoxious, and now, not only that, now she is threatened and her life is threatened. no one should have to put up with that. >> in fact, you are also convening a grand jury looking into whether there are additional charges against additional individuals that may be appropriate. my question to you is, i know that in ohio it is a felony to fail to report a crime. is that the most serious crime you're looking into or does it go deeper? is it more serious, a potential coverup? >> well, just one point. it is not a felony, unfortunately. it is a fourth-degree misdemeanor which is a low misdemeanor to knowingly not report a felony, but we're looking at everything. i think i owe the steubenville community two things.

one is to try to get this thing over with as quickly as we can but two, to do it the right way and leave no stone unturned. people need to feel that justice was done and that no one was obstructing justice in any way, so our investigation and the grand jury which is really a continuation of what we've begun, we've already interviewed 60 witnesses, i felt based on my experience as a prosecutor we needed to conclude this by going to a grand jury where we can bring witnesses in, where the citizens of jefferson county can sit there and listen to that evidence, and that's what we're trying to do to see if there's anyone else who failed to report a crime or obstructed justice or committed a crime. >> do you have a particular target in this grand jury investigation, specifically are you looking at the football coach here? >> no, no. i think that would be a mistake to think we're looking specifically at the football coach or coaches.

there's 27 coaches, actually, on the football team for the football team, but we're looking at every aspect of this. rape case is over with. these two individuals have been found guilty, that's clearly the correct verdict but we're looking to see was there any other crime committed surrounding this rape and we're not going into any preconceived notions and we may come out with indictments and we may not. we'll see where the evidence takes us. >> ohio attorney general mike dewine thank you for your time, we appreciate it. >> thank you. coming up, an eye opener for parents, wait until you see how fast preschoolers can get into pill bottles with the child-resistant safety caps. and sheer madness, the yoga pants being recalled because they're too see-through. hoda, that one is for you. >> stop it. >> this is "today" on nbc.

"today" national investigative correspondent jeff rossen is here with more. this is a frightening story. >> it affects a lot of people, not just parents but any of us who have young kids who come over the house, the most common medications we all have in our homes we assume the safety caps on top of the bottle also keep our kids out. after all, even adults if you're like me have a hard time with it, sometimes you have to push down and twist. so you wonder how could a little kid open it? as you're about to see even for preschoolers it can be child's

play. >> look at. >> reporter: this 4-year-old just opened a bottle of cough seyrup syrup, potentially lethal. this boy just got into powerful pain killers. >> got it. >> reporter: how'd they do that? all the bottles are sealed with child safety caps. that's scary for a lot of parents. >> it should be scary. whatever they've got here could kill your child. >> reporter: kate carr is with the watchdog group safe kids. these caps may be part of a bigger problem. the nthe new report shows a stu 30% spike over the past decade in young kids accidentally poisoned by medication. 67,000 children rushed to hospital ers in 2011 alone. i'm looking at the bottles, pink liquid, gummy candies, this is enticin enticing. >> looks like candy, they'll swallow it and go after more. >> reporter: you're about to see how fast it can happen. we invited this group of

4-year-olds to a play date, then we bought several medications, from ibuprofen to acetaminophen, cough syrup to iron pills and prescription ant bi cough syrup to iron pills and prescription ant bbiotics and toxic drain and floor cleaners. if swallowed by a child, all these products can be poisonous, even deadly. that's why they come with child resistant safety caps. before our test, we dumped everything out. we even cleaned and sanitized the bottles. so nothing was left behind. back at the play date, with their parents looking on, we get started. we want to see how quickly you can open these bottles. one, two, three, go. within three seconds, watch. you got it that fast. >> got it. >> reporter: francesca pops the safety cap on ibuprofen, the

number one drug kids get into, about a minute later she opens another bottle of acetaminophen, number three on the list. you opened that one, too in. >> yes. >> was that easy to open? >> yes. >> reporter: the boys are doing it, too. mark here opens the cough syrup, and those dangerous pain killers. remember, this could be poison for a child. yet there's braden opening bottles, no problem at all. >> easy. >> reporter: every single child in our group opened one bottle. olivia opened two within minutes. how'd you open that? >> i did it all by myself. >> reporter: really fast. >> i am really fast, because i'm a big girl. >> reporter: her mom watched in horror. >> i was frightened. you buy these items expecting them to be childproof and my little 4-year-old sat there and opened it. >> reporter: one after the other after the other. >> very easily. >> reporter: what you may not know under federal law these caps don't have to be

childproof, just child resistant. are the regulations tight enough? >> i think they are. we don't want to make it impossible to open something but we want to make sure kids can't get to medicine. >> reporter: she says it comes down to us as adults. we leave medication in our bags, on counters as a reminder to take them but that can also make them easily accessible to small kids. for francesca's dad, our play date was a wake-up call. >> got it. >> i got to go home and check the house of the medicines and the bottles and make sure they're put away seeing as they're easily opened by a 4-year-old is dangerous. >> it was easy. >> those kids are cute but it is frightening to watch. how do you protect your children? safety experts say it's unrealistic to think we're going to lock up our medication so the easiest thing to do, just take it off your night stand, off your kitchen counter and put it up and away, where you can reach it but your kids can't. by the end of our play date we told the kids this was just a test.

we'll go over to dylan now. >> good morning. we are going to see some pretty chilly weather for spring. this isn't what you'd expect this time of year b 15 , about 25 degrees below average. we have lake-effect snow across parts of the great lakes naturally where the lake-effect snow machine is on because the lakes really haven't gotten all that frozen. you can see heavy snow in and around buffalo, looks like we could end up with six to nine inches, even off the shores of lake ontario we could end up with a foot of lake-effect snow for the first day of spring so it is going to be extremely snowy in that area, and very cold, up across minneapolis, minnesota, 19 degrees, 24 in chicago today. we'll be in the 40s up and down the northeast coast and 50s across the southeast so below average down 8:32 on wednesday morning.

the other end behind the runway a giant 12-foot pump filled with flowers and covered with flowers and that is to celebrate the opening of our shoe department, a quarter million pairs of shoes. >> people think of macy's at herald square but you can see this flower display in other places around the country, too. >> we do six shows, they all open on sunday. there's this one, the one in philadelphia centre city, minneapolis downtown, in chicago rather, and in san francisco. then we have a show in washington, d.c., which ties in with the cherry blossom festival. >> you informed us, robin, the thing we're looking at on top of the elephant, what is that called? >> a howda. today we'll call it a hoda.

>> got it. >> keep cleaning, okay? so we're going to trim the inside, so all that hairy stuff, savannah, get rid of it and the little turnle leaves right there. >> this is so much work. don't they have it at the grocery store done? >> okay, yes. they're not usually done. i take little scissors like this, natalie you want to help us and just trim them. >> i'm not going anywhere near these two with knifes. >> we're adults. >> you want to learn how to do this, it's pretty cool. you can do it like that or pull them off, cut the ends, they're not that pretty and just trim and you take them and the "e" is eat and enjoy. you cook them in there, 45 minutes until they're tender. >> we have about 30 seconds so show them the end piece. >> i top them with a little bruscheta and serve them room temperature.

good morning to you. 9:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. we learned this morning a san jose police officer who shot and killed a suspect monday was also involved in a shoot-out last november. the officer is a five-year veteran of the force. investigators say he shot and killed the driver of a stolen car in east san jose after the car slammed into two police cars and accelerated straight at him. back in november the same officer shot and injured a crime spree suspect who reportedly had an officer pinned down by gunfire. in fremont, investigators believe a truck you see in this photo may have been stolen and used in a break-in at a pse&g storage yard on boyce road. the thieves made off with $25,000 worth of copper wire. we're going to take a quick break but have a look at the all important forecast and morning commute.
